Iraqi government takes 10 TV stations off the air for 'incitement'

Iraqi authorities have suspended 10 television networks in response to their coverage of the killing of dozens of Sunni demonstrators by the Iraqi Army last week.

The Communications and Media Commission, responsible for licensing foreign and Iraqi media outlets, said Al Jazeera and nine other networks would be banned from operating until they addressed what the commission called violations of a code of conduct during their coverage of the storming of a sit-in last week.

Coverage by the channels ?constitutes an incitement and escalation that is closer to mistruth, intimidation, and exaggeration than it is to objectivity,? the commission said in a statement announcing the suspensions. It said the networks had engaged in ?clear calls for disorder and launching retaliatory criminal attacks against security forces and explicit promotion of constitutionally and legally banned terrorist organizations.?

RECOMMENDED: Sunni and Shiite Islam: Do you know the difference? Take our quiz.

Iraq has been convulsed by antigovernment demonstrations in Sunni areas for almost six months. At least 50 demonstrators were killed when the Iraqi Army and special forces moved in to clear a public square in Huweijah they had surrounded for five days after a soldier was shot near the location during a Friday protest. Security forces had cordoned off the square, preventing protesters from leaving until they gave up the unknown gunman.

Dozens of people, including several police, were killed in attacks in several other cities, fueled by anger over the killings in Huweijah.

The media adviser to Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki said Mr. Maliki had not been aware of the ban by the independent commission until it was announced and was not in favor of sweeping suspensions.

?We still don?t know the criteria or standards that they used to make this decision,? says Ali al-Mussawi. ?Frankly I would say the shortcoming of the commission was not in the decision itself but in not making clear the evidence for it.?

But, he said, five of the suspended channels had been operating illegally, without any licenses.

?If a station is violating the law, the commission has to act because there is a violation, but for us, we have to look at whether these suspensions are effective,? he says. ?Most of the time they are not, because the media operates across borders.?

Qatar-based Al Jazeera network, the parent of both the Arabic and English channels, said it was ?astonished? by the suspension.

?The fact that so many channels have been hit all at once ? suggests this is an indiscriminate decision. We urge the authorities to uphold freedom for the media to report the important stories taking place in Iraq.?

Iraq has long accused the wealthy, predominantly Sunni Gulf state of funding unrest and trying to destabilize the Iraqi government. Qatar denies the charge.

The suspension has not been imposed on Al Jazeera English, which was allowed to operate in Iraq even when the Arabic network was banned in the country several years ago.

Sarah Leah Whitson, Human Rights Watch Middle East director, says the network suspensions constituted a worrying sign of a crackdown on free speech.

?Foreign journalists are talking about how much more difficult it has become for them to come to the country and to get visas to move around the country, so it?s of great concern because the feeling is that the space for free speech and free media is shrinking," she says.

Huweijah, near Kirkuk, was cordoned off by security forces before, during, and after the military operation. Media reporting on the crackdown relied on accounts from witnesses.

Human Rights Watch condemned the military's actions as ?grossly excessive use of force."

?For the government to have made such grandiose claims of murderers having entered the camp with a stash of weapons and yet to have no credible evidence that this was the case, despite the deaths of so many of these protesters, is shocking,? Ms. Whitson says.

In letters sent to the suspended networks this week, the commission noted that provincial security forces had been advised that journalists would face legal charges if they tried to work.

Iraq?s own state-run broadcaster, Iraqiya, has also been criticized for violations of the commission?s code of conduct, which includes providing respectful coverage in the aftermath of killings.

During coverage of a defense ministry ceremony to bury, with state honors, five off-duty soldiers who were murdered in Anbar this week, Iraqiya broadcast footage not only of Maliki paying his respects, but of the soldiers? bloodied bodies, with detailed descriptions of their wounds. The commission has not announced any action against the network.

Editor's note: Jane Arraf is also a correspondent for Al Jazeera.

Chrysler sales slump ahead of new model launches

By Bernie Woodall and Jennifer Clark

DETROIT/MILAN (Reuters) - Carmaker Fiat's first quarter profit slumped more than expected as its U.S. unit Chrysler's sales suffered from the phase out of the Jeep Liberty pending a new model launch.

"We knew we would be limping in the quarter. I just didn't think I was going to limp that much," said Sergio Marchionne, chief executive of both Chrysler and its parent Fiat, on a conference call with analysts and reporters.

Marchionne in January warned that Chrysler's first-quarter earnings would be down from a year earlier because of the expense of product launches and the fact that the Jeep Liberty SUV was no longer being produced.

The Liberty's successor, the Jeep Cherokee, was not sold in the first quarter and will not be sold until the third quarter.

But Marchionne said that there were delays in the production launches of the Jeep Grand Cherokee and RAM heavy duty trucks, which he said are among the highest profit-makers for the automaker.

Fiat, which took control of the third-largest U.S. automaker when Chrysler emerged from a government-sponsored bankruptcy four years ago, stood by its financial forecasts for 2013 despite a worsening European car market and lower revenue in the U.S. for the first quarter.

Fiat said it sees full-year revenue in the 88 billion euro to 92 billion euro range, trading profit between 4 billion and 4.5 billion euros, and net industrial debt of about 7 billion euros.

Analysts had expected a weak quarter for the combined group, which reports consolidated earnings, and the results came in below consensus.

Trading profit was 618 million euros, below the 720 million euros forecast by 21 analysts published on Fiat's website. Pre-tax profit came in at 160 million euros, compared to a forecast of 300 million euros by analysts.

Net debt was 7.10 billion euros, in line with forecasts, and higher than the 6.5 billion euros at the end of 2012.

Citi Research analyst Harald Hendrikse said the quarter's results again highlight Fiat's difficult debt issue.

"With debt at current levels, the company cannot compete in this industry longer term against giants like Volkswagen AG spending 16 billion euros on capital expenditures and research and development," said a Citi Research report issued on Monday.

European losses narrowed, however, despite a 10 percent market drop.

Fiat's loss in Europe before interest and tax narrowed to 111 million euros from a loss of 170 million euros the quarter before. Fiat's mass market car sales in Europe fell by 8 percent, bolstered by the launch of the new Fiat 500L small car, the company said.

At Chrysler, first-quarter net income fell 65 percent to $166 million from $473 million a year earlier. Net revenue slipped 6 percent to $15.4 billion.

On the conference call, Marchionne introduced Richard Palmer, Chrysler's chief financial officer, by saying Palmer would give the "not so glorious details of a not so glorious quarter."

LOOKING AHEAD

Chrysler said it will increase vehicle shipments in the second quarter by at least 13 percent from the first quarter, to 650,000 vehicles up from 574,000 in the first quarter.

Of the vehicles the company shipped in the first quarter, 73 percent went to the U.S. market, up from 69 percent a year earlier.

Marchionne said the Jeep Grand Cherokee, now that its launch delays are over, will show strong April sales, and that the biggest boost in Grand Cherokee sales will show in the third quarter.

Marchionne said in the coming quarters Chrysler will better match up production and retail sales performance.

"Close your eyes, plug your nose and move it on from here," said Marchionne.

A football family: Behind-the-scenes with the Trufants, who now ...

?"Football?s been in my life forever. With Marcus, my cousin Grady, my cousin Omar, they all played football. I?ve always been around the game. I was at practices running around with them, my cousin had his practices, I was the ballboy on Marcus? team when they went to the state championship, things like that. As far as I can remember, football?s always been in my life."? ~ Desmond Trufant

Tacoma isn?t a city of dreams. It?s a mill town, a blue-collar city, the ugly middle child between genteel Seattle and the crunchy capitol in Olympia. But on clear days at Wilson High School, where the Trufant brothers played football, Mount Rainier rises into the sky without connection to the horizon, a floating colossus of impossible height. It is ghostly and distant -- but in truth, it?s not so far away. It can be climbed.

Lakewood, the nondescript Tacoma suburb where Lloyd and Constance Trufant live now, was, until the mid-?90s, just another undesirable stretch of Tacoma: the closest place to Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Base for young married soldiers and airmen to live. As such, many of the houses date back to the post-Cold War military boom and are appropriately shabby -- mold creeping up from the ground, yards and roofs overrun with wet leaves, a general low-slung disrepair exacerbated by the long shadows cast by towering conifers.

Stumble onto the right street, though, and you?ll find enclaves of wealth, usually on the shores of one of the town?s four lakes. It?s here, on Lake Steilacoom, nine days before the 2013 NFL draft, that I find the house Marcus Trufant bought for his parents after an All-Pro selection led to a six-year, $50 million contract with the Seahawks in 2008.

Whereas most of the houses on the block are hidden by hedges or fences, the Trufant residence is open, welcoming. The split-level is neither ostentatious nor modest, but the wide deck over the lake makes it clear that it?s in no way cheap. The house is filled with family photos, football paraphernalia and floor-to-ceiling windows on the lake side.

Next week, Marcus, who went to the Seahawks with the 11th overall selection in the 2003 draft, will see his youngest brother, Desmond, go to the Falcons with the 22nd pick. Isaiah, the middle brother, went undrafted in 2006 and played arena football and in the UFL before landing with the Jets, where he?s played the last three years. The stated purpose of the family gathering -- including grandfather, aunts, cousins -- is a celebration of Desmond?s impending jump to the pros. But over the course of the night, I get the feeling that they?re together simply because that?s what they do.

***

Desmond was 12 years old when Marcus, a second team All-America cornerback at Washington State, was drafted by the Seahawks.

"I remember he had a separate party, family or coaches or anybody that influenced him, at this place called Julius?s. I was a young kid, I really didn?t know what was going on, I was just excited for him, I was going to be happy for him no matter what happened. And he got picked by Seattle, we went over to the party, and I remember him having to do his press conference."

A lot has changed since 2003, from the way the NFL draft gets covered to the rules that hamper a defensive back?s game.

"All the rules, all the stuff you can?t do nowadays, it?s a little bit crazy, but that?s just how the game is," Marcus says. "You gotta be able to adjust, but I think he?ll be OK. And I?m going through the same thing as the game changes -- I just finished my 10th year, of course -- and you have to adjust if you wanna make it in the game."

A decade later, Desmond stands in front of the Atlanta press in a smart navy suit -- zip sweater, natty plaid tie, pocket square -- for his own press conference, offering the Teflon platitudes about his work ethic and skill set that are at once true and too general to sound like anything substantive.

"I can fit into any scheme," he said to me -- and likely other media members at different times. "Because at Washington, we did a little bit of everything. We played zone, we played man, I played off coverage, I played press, I played slot, I even lined up at safety sometimes. I?m diverse, you can put me in different spots."

It is the practiced art of saying nothing (encouraged by the media?s habit of asking the same questions), and if the press conference was all I knew about Desmond Trufant, I wouldn?t know him at all.

***

Lloyd "Chill" Trufant has a cornerback?s build: even in his 50s, he?s compact and trim with ramrod posture. He acts and dresses like a New Orleans musician, which he is, in parts. Though he grew up just outside of the Crescent City, he didn?t play music until he was an adult. "I craved music as a child," he says. "I always wanted to be in the school band, but we couldn?t afford it. And I?m not ashamed to say that, because there were 10 of us. For me, to go ask my dad to buy a trumpet, or a guitar, that would be like suicide." He laughs.

"I got to working as a teenager -- I?m talkin? slave labor, pickin? tomatoes and cucumbers -- and I bought me a guitar and an amplifier. I didn?t know how to play nothin?. I got chased out of the house ?cuz I didn?t know how to play it."

Stationed at Fort Lewis after being drafted, Chill borrowed a bass and taught himself how to play one song. "I was playin? that song, and this old sergeant came up and said, ?Man you sound good on that. You wanna be in the band?? I said, ?Yeah!?"

Chill?s love of music was the spark for his future family. Or, in his words: "Constance was kinda like a groupie. She was stalking me."

His wife laughs. Did she have a crush on Chill? "I did. I followed the band around." But they never actually met until her car broke down. She glances sheepishly at her father, Frederick "Pa" Johnson, before telling the story. "My father probably don?t know this," she says, eliciting laughter.

"I had a little orange Pinto, ?72 hatchback, I went on Fort Lewis with my friend Anita to meet her friend -- I had to drive her because I had the car. But the car broke down. ... It was my shining star, nice and orange, big rims and everything. It was tricked out. I know a tricked out Pinto sounds bad, but you had to see it. Anita called her friend that we were going to meet, and lo and behold, Lloyd was in the car -- he was best friends with her friend, and I didn?t even know that.

"And so he fixed the Pinto, and ever since then, he?s been fixing my cars. Thirty-five years later, here we are."

"I just wanted to take advantage, show everybody that I?m elite."

Without games on TV, it?s easy to forget that even the offseason is rigorous for players, and this is truest for the college players who declare for the NFL draft. After finishing his senior season at the University of Washington, Desmond had a week to relax before moving to Arizona to train at Athletes? Performance -- the "leader in integrated performance training, nutrition, and physical therapy for elite and professional athletes," according to its website -- where he trained for the Senior Bowl.

A sparkling Senior Bowl performance in January catapulted him up the draft charts. As NFL.com analyst Daniel Jeremiah noted:

Most teams that I spoke with prior to the Senior Bowl had Trufant pegged as a middle-of-the-second-round-type player. Following three days of practice, nearly every personnel executive I spoke with considers him a likely first-round pick.

Most scouts pegged Desmond as the best cornerback at the Senior Bowl, where he shined against the toughest wide receivers in college. "I just wanted to take advantage, show everybody that I?m elite," he says of the showcase.

After that, it was back to Arizona. "I continued to work, work really hard there to get ready for the combine," he tells me, and the results from Indianapolis in February reflect his words: He ran "a cool 40," he says, opting not to disclose the time of his blistering 40-yard dash (4.31 unofficial, 4.38 official). He survived the other hoops, as well -- "the meetings, the interviews, the hospital, the psychological tests -- there?s a lot of things at the combine. It was a stressful time, but I was prepared for it."

He returned to Arizona once again, this time to prepare for UW?s pro day in March, where he skipped the 40 and weights but put on a positional workout that NFL.com described as "phenomenal." The long build to the NFL draft, he says, "has been an incredible journey," and the miles alone justify a literal meaning.

Music was Chill?s passion, but it didn?t pay the bills. "I was what you call a ?starving musician?," he says. During the day, he worked as a framer for Milgard Windows, while Constance was a manager in the Social Security Administration. Their focus on family sounds like a political ad?s description of middle-class triumph.

"We put them first," Constance says. "My husband and I did a lot of sacrificing to give the kids what they wanted. I think they saw that we made sure that they were fed, they were clothed, that they were in school and did their homework, and that it mattered. We cared, and they saw that we cared."

Marcus? stories of childhood reflect effective parenthood: the adults rarely appear in the stories, but they?re an ever-present source of boundaries. "We?ve got a lot of cousins," he says, "either we were at my grandfather?s house and we was tearin? up his front yard, or runnin? through the yard, actin? crazy, or at our parents? house. There were games; we would race all the time. There were games our parents didn?t know about. We?d be downstairs, turn the lights off, and just go crazy, fight, then we?d wait for a little bit because someone was crying, then we?d talk about it, then we?d do it again. We had a lot of fun."

"Everybody kind of fed off of each other," says Grady Maxwell, a cousin two years older than Des and a former three-star recruit who signed with Washington State before injuries ended his career. "It?s always been competitive. My grandfather had 10 girls, but he?s got over 40 or 50 grandkids, and over half of them are boys, so we?ve always been competing, no matter what it is. Even though [Marcus and Isaiah were] way older than me, I was competing against them, regardless of what we were doing."

"We?d go to the park as a family," says Marcus, "me and all the cousins -- me, Isaiah, Des, everybody. There?d probably be about 10 to 20 of us, everybody in the neighborhood. We played out in the street. And we did that stuff all the time -- it was always competitive, it was always fun, it was always lots of laughter."

But the Trufant boys were never pushed into sports, insists Chill. "Our objective was mainly to keep them active with the boys? clubs and sports. We just let them try everything, and made sure they did what they said they were going to do. To me it was exercise -- something besides going to school, come home, and look at TV. You gotta go to practice, you gotta go to school, and you gotta do your paper route in the morning ... That made them stronger, to realize that you can accomplish things with hard work.

"There were times when they were real little, they wanted to play, but somebody might not want to go to practice. ?No, you goin? to practice!?"

Constance interjects: "You make the commitment, you follow through."

"People will respect you for your word," Chill continues, "and that?s what I instilled in them. Don?t just say something to pacify [others] -- and I see that in them now, as grown men. One of them calls me and says, ?I?m doing this,? I can bank on that."

Despite the money Marcus has made, and the lucrative contract Desmond will soon sign, the family remains committed to the competitive nucleus of family that fostered its inherent athletic talent.

"When I look at my sons with kids," says Constance, "Marcus and Isaiah, they?re very caring, very nurturing. Desmond, he doesn?t have any children yet, he loves kids--"

Des laughs his assent, a distinct, relaxed laugh that sounds like a less energetic version of Jay Pharoah?s impression of Jay-Z on "Saturday Night Live."

Constance finishes: "--he loves playing with his nieces, his nephews, he?s really kind-hearted."

She reminisces about the family and the time they spent together before her mother died, before the turn of the century. "We were always together at get-togethers like you saw tonight, having chicken or whatever, sweet potato pie, barbecue--"

"Cakes," Marcus adds.

"My mother?s cakes," Constance explains.

Des chimes in: "Blackberry pie!"

She finishes: "That was our family, so that?s our heritage, that?s our tradition. That?s what we do, and we want to carry that on, and the kids, they carry that on also."

***

Desmond had originally planned to be in New York for the draft, but changed his mind out of his concern for Pa. "I wanted my grandfather to be with me, it?s hard for him to travel, and I want him to experience the moment with me. I?m gonna be home with my family -- it?s gonna be similar to Marcus? [draft party] -- we?ll have all the friends and the people that have helped me get to this point."

On Thursday night, Atlanta trades up from 30 to 22 in order to draft Desmond. ESPN shows him on the phone, mostly listening to coach Mike Smith and owner Arthur Blank, while tears well in his eyes.

"It was just exciting," he tells me a few days later, back in Seattle after the Atlanta press conference. "So much hard work throughout my whole life, you dream about that one day, you finally reach it, you?re just so happy. I was just happy and thankful."

"Was it the biggest night of your life?" I ask.

"Definitely. I?ve been working for that moment my whole life, to reach it and finally get there, and just having my family with me there and supporting me, it was big. My parents were right there, my brothers, my cousins, my little nieces and nephews were there, too. My grandfather -- my entire family was there. It was a beautiful thing."

Before the draft, I asked Constance if she felt spoiled having Marcus in Seattle for 10 years while Des played his college career at UW. "We?re definitely going to miss him," she said. "We were just blessed to have Marcus here close, Desmond here close. ... It was great. It was easy. We were definitely spoiled."

But, she added, they traveled to the Meadowlands regularly to see Isaiah, so they?re accustomed to long travel.

"We?ll come see him. We?ll be there."

Netflix's 'Orange is the New Black' debuting July 11th as part of its original series

Despite having recently introduced the likes of Hemlock Grove and House of Cards, Netflix isn't staying put and is now boosting its original content with yet another production: Orange is the New Black. The new comedic drama series, created by Weeds' own Jenji Kohan, is set to start streaming to worldwide Netflix subscribers beginning July 11th. Similar to Netflix's House of Cards, Orange is the New Black consists of thirteen episodes running at around 60 minutes -- however, the main story here won't be based on drama coming out of D.C., but rather a "world populated with unforgettable characters and no-holds-barred humor set against the backdrop of a women's prison." Be sure to peruse over the PR after the break, where you'll find more deets about the plot as well as the full cast.

(AP) ? Technology companies led the Standard & Poor's 500 index to an all-time closing high Monday.

The stock market has recovered all the ground it lost over the previous two weeks, when worries over slower economic growth, falling commodity prices and disappointing quarterly earnings battered financial markets.

The S&P 500 index rose 11.37 points to close at 1,593.61. The 0.7 percent increase nudged the index above its previous closing high of 1,593.36, reached on April 11.

"The market has had a terrific run," said Philip Orlando, chief equity strategist at Federated Investors, noting that the S&P 500 is up 12 percent since the start of 2013. "At the beginning of the year, I thought we were going to 1,660 (for the whole year). We're only about 5 percent from that."

A pair of better economic reports gave investors some encouragement. Wages and spending rose in the U.S. last month, and pending home sales hit their highest level in three years.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 106.20 to 14,818.75, up 0.7 percent. Microsoft and IBM were among the Dow's best performers, rising more than 2 percent each. IBM alone accounted for a third of the Dow's increase. The index is just 46 points below its own record high of 14,865 reached on April 11.

Tech's popularity Monday was a change from earlier this month, when it lagged the rest of the market. Concerns about weak business spending and slower overseas sales have cast a shadow over big tech firms, said Marty Leclerc, the managing partner of Barrack Yard Advisors, an investment firm in Bryn Mawr, Pa.

Revenue misses from IBM and other big tech companies have highlighted the industry's vulnerability to the world economy. But Leclerc thinks tech companies with steady revenue and plenty of cash look appealing over the long term.

Information technology stocks rose the most of the 10 industry groups in the S&P Monday, up 1.6 percent. It's the only group that remains lower over the past year, down 2 percent, versus the S&P 500's gain of 14 percent.

The Nasdaq composite rose 27.76 points to 3,307.02, an increase of 0.9 percent. Apple, the biggest stock in the index, surged 3 percent to $430.12.

The number of Americans who signed contracts to buy homes reached the highest level since April 2010, according to the National Association of Realtors. Back then, a tax credit for buying houses had lifted sales. In a separate report, the government said Americans' spending and income both edged up last month.

A handful of companies reported earnings on Monday. Eaton Corp.'s quarterly net income beat Wall Street's estimates, helped by its acquisition of Cooper Industries, an electrical equipment supplier. But the manufacturer's revenue fell short. Its stock climbed 3 percent to $60.28.

Eaton's results followed a larger pattern this earnings season. Of the 274 companies that have turned in results, seven of 10 have beaten analysts' estimates for earnings, according to S&P Capital IQ. But when it comes to revenue, six of 10 have missed estimates. That suggests companies are squeezing more profits out of cost cutting, instead of higher sales.

Moody's and Standard & Poor's parent company McGraw-Hill surged following news that the ratings agencies settled lawsuits dating back to the financial crisis that accused them of concealing risky investments. McGraw-Hill gained 3 percent to $53.45, while Moody's jumped 8 percent to $59.69, the biggest gain in the S&P 500.

In the market for government bonds, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note slipped to 1.66 percent, close to its low for the year. That's down from 1.67 percent late Friday.

Unknown Huawei P6-U06 smartphone shows off 6.2mm profile in Chinese certification

The FCC isn't the only agency playing with devices we don't even know exist, and its Chinese equivalent has recently had some hands-on time with an unknown Huawei smartphone, codename P6-U06. Luckily, there are a few pics and specs to accompany the filing, which tell us it weighs 120g (4.2 ounces) and measures 132.6 x 65.5 x 6.18mm (5.2 x 2.6 x 0.2 inch), meaning it could be one of the super-slim P series handsets a Huawei exec hinted at CES. We didn't see any evidence of these at MWC, but the same exec promised more was to come in 2013, possibly starting with this P6-U06.

Those dimensions house a 4.7-inch TFT screen at 720p resolution, quad-core 1.5GHz processor, 2GB RAM, an 8-megapixel camera on the back and an unusually large 5-megapixel sensor in the shooter up front. Unsurprisingly, Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean is listed as the OS, while dual-SIM support and GSM / WCDMA radios suggest Asia as the target market (not to mention the Chinese certification). That's all we've got on the P6-U06 for now, but in lieu of official press shots, the handset strikes a couple more candid poses after the break.

Educational Technology: Will Your Next Teaching Job Be Online ...

First in a series of posts looking at the rapidly evolving world of online education for school-age students.

?Technologies are not simply inventions which people employ but are the means by which people are reinvented.? ?Marshall McLuhan (1911?1980)

In recent posts about technology in education, we looked at some ways teachers are integrating personal tech devices into the classroom. Whether for memorization, research, or group project management, handheld computers are changing how students interact with teachers, and how classes access and share information.

The technologies and applications that have driven the use of tablets in classrooms have helped inspire new online curriculum designs that are challenging the concept of what makes a school. Virtual schools and online programs use Internet technology to provide full courses and academic programs, and their popularity is growing. Whether used to augment a traditional or homeschool program or to completely replace it, the virtual classroom will be impacting most students at some point in their educational career.

As an educator, how will this impact you? Are you ready to take the step into using virtual class management and delivery systems? What traits, skills, and training are important for an online teacher? How do you find out more about virtual teaching options in your field and area?

Traits and Skills Virtual Schools Value
teacher at laptop © Igorr | Dreamstime.comWhether teaching for a virtual school or managing one online class in a traditional school, teachers are almost always required to meet their state licensing requirements. Some private or college virtual schools will waive this when substantial expertise is shown. Being well-versed in your field is still important, and a strong work history and attendance record remains valuable. Experience in instructional design, a history of welcoming innovations in teaching, and a desire to stay current with technology are all helpful.

Think about how to translate your classroom skills into virtual applications. Being able to communicate effectively in writing is very important, not just to deliver information, but to engage students?just like in the classroom. Online ?listening? can be a more subtle challenge, so developing your skills in reading between the lines and seeing what is happening with a student is a valuable skill. Flexibility and creativity are as important for online teaching as they are in a classroom, sometimes even more so when you do not have face-to-face or even real-time communication.

Teaching Style
The teaching style you adopt when teaching online may be dictated by the delivery system your virtual school uses, which you can read more about in the next section. But your personality will have opportunities to shine through. Finding ways to adapt your personal style to virtual teaching may take time but is encouraged by most schools. Making personal connections with pupils is still a key element.

If you are dreaming of sitting at your computer in your sweats and sipping your chai tea all day while typing encouragement to students and managing message boards, you may be in for a surprise. A comfortable chair may be as important to an online teacher as comfortable shoes are to a classroom teacher, but online programs increasingly use video technology to allow direct communication. You may even be working in an office or school environment instead of from home.

Your work hours may be set similarly to a classroom, with late afternoons or evenings dedicated to grading and preparation. Some schools cater to populations that need different hours for contact time, so expect some evening communication with students.

Virtual Delivery Systems
Being familiar with hosted content management systems (CMS) such as Blackboard is a big help when moving from a classroom to online teaching. Some virtual schools have full curriculum programs with supporting class management requirements, and teachers have little latitude in changing lesson plans. The CMS field is full of change and growth, so expect to need ongoing training and support. There are also curriculum programs that allow teachers more input into content and delivery options, but almost all virtual programs depend on some preset subscribed system to manage coursework.

For a few teachers, their first online experience comes within the traditional school where they have taught for years. They may take on the role of working with students who are required to remain off-site for health or other reasons. While some schools rely on a CMS for these situations, others require the teacher to modify existing courses to meet the student?s needs.

Finding Online Teaching Jobs
wikimedia commons Marisa Ravn 2009 SpillingVirtual school teaching positions are showing up on all the major educational job listing services. Since most virtual schools are charter schools, start checking in your local school districts, and expand to include any state that you are licensed in. Search the Web for state-by-state listings of virtual schools chartered in your area.

If you apply to teach for an out-of-state school, expect to fulfill licensure requirements, and clearly show your willingness to do so in your application. There are national schools that accept teachers with any licensure and have teachers working all across the country. All have sections for prospective teachers on their websites.

Use your tech-savvy skills to support your application where possible. If you have prepared your own set of instructional videos and managed message boards, provide a demonstration option in your r?sum? materials. While you may have a live interview, you may not, so think of ways to demonstrate your comfort with working in the virtual community.

Some Pros and Cons of Teaching Online
It can sound like a dream job. You may find yourself teaching flexible hours with students across the country, and find that you really enjoy that. Some teachers are drawn to online schools that support marginalized students, and find it a challenge that they enjoy. You will probably spend less on your school wardrobe and transportation costs.

In some instances, though, the preset curriculum does not allow for any change, so if you are very attached to using particular materials or projects, you will not be able to. And if you thrive on being in the room with your students, carefully consider the impact of working alone and online. Check on the pay rate for online teachers to see if it compares with classroom teachers.

Future posts in this series will explore the types of online schools for the K?12 student, some curriculum models they are using, and different ways online courses are being used by school districts and homeschoolers. We will see how some individualized and group teaching methods are being employed by teachers in virtual schools.

Are you teaching any courses in an online environment? What pros and cons have you encountered? Have you considered moving from the classroom to the computer to reach students? Please share your experiences, thoughts, and questions in the comments.

The iTunes influence, part one: How Apple changed the face of the music marketplace

The iTunes influence, part one How Apple changed the face of the music marketplace

"iTunes is a stepping stone along the way."
-- Jim Griffin, OneHouse LLC

On April 28th, the iTunes Store basked in a milestone 10th birthday. Two years before its 2003 launch (as the iTunes Music Store), Apple introduced the iTunes client as a desktop music management program and implemented it as the device manager for the first iPod later in 2001. In those two years, Apple laid the groundwork for what can reasonably be called the iTunes era of music.

Apple did not invent digital music, even though for many iTunes embodies 21st century music buying. However, during the past 10 years, it has become the US' top music retailer, with customers currently downloading 15,000 songs per minute from the app's library of 26 million songs, according to an Apple spokesperson. Since its launch, it has evolved into the hub of a powerhouse media / tech ecosystem that turned Apple into the world's most valuable company in 2012.

As a symbolic milestone, the iTunes anniversary encourages reflection on the past, a survey of the present and predictions of the future. Digital music continues to evolve, for businesses, consumers, and musicians

Will Chael Sonnen hang it up for good after UFC 159 loss to Jon Jones?

Minutes after losing by TKO to UFC light heavyweight Jon Jones, Chael Sonnen indicated his fighting days may be over.

"I'm not going to be one of the guys to hang around. If there's not a road to the title, then this sport isn't for me. I believe that was probably my last opportunity," Sonnen said to UFC commentator Joe Rogan.

He didn't specifically say "I'm retiring," but he did talk about the end of the road. This seems like more than the emotional ramblings of a fighter after a bad loss. B.J. Penn threatened retirement several times before it stuck. Nick Diaz has retired and unretired plenty of times.

Retirement wouldn't be out of the question. He's 36 years old and has fought in 40 fights after a long career as an amateur and collegiate wrestler.

If he does decide to retire, don't expect him to play shuffleboard and take up gardening. He already works as a commentator for Fox's broadcasts. During the last season of "The Ultimate Fighter," he proved to be a capable coach. Retirement would not mean Sonnen was done with MMA.

Sonnen talked his way into a title shot with Jones just months after he dropped a title shot to Anderson Silva at middleweight. Deserved or not, Sonnen has had several chances to win the UFC belt, and he hasn't won any of them. Not many fighters get more chances than he has. If the belt is the only thing that's important, why not retire?

Gunmen surround Libyan foreign ministry to push demands

PARIS, April 26 (Reuters) - Paris St Germain midfielder Thiago Motta has been banned for three games after his dismissal for violent conduct in a French Cup quarter-final at Evian Thonon Gaillard, the national federation (FFF) said on Friday. The Italy international was shown a straight red card for kicking playmaker Cedric Barbosa in PSG's penalty shootout defeat last week. Thiago Motta, who has had a series of injuries this season, has already served one game of his ban and will also miss Sunday's Ligue 1 trip to 16th-placed Evian and next weekend's home match with mid-table Valenciennes. ...

(AP) ? Algeria's president was hospitalized Saturday after having a mini-stroke without serious complications, the state news agency said.

Abdelaziz Bouteflika, 76, had a brief blockage of a blood vessel ? called a transient ischemic attack ? around noon, Rachid Bougherbal, the director of the national center of sports medicine told the state news agency.

"His excellency the president of the republic must observe a period of rest for further examinations," he said, adding that "there was no reason for worry."

Prime Minister Abdelmalek Sellal said the president was hospitalized, "but the situation is not serious."

Bouteflika has ruled the oil-rich North African country since 1999 and has long believed to be in poor health and rarely appears in public. The state news agency rarely carries any reports on the president's health

The announcement also comes as speculation is rife that Bouteflika will run for a fourth term in presidential elections just a year away, despite promises to step down. In Algeria, power is delicately shared between civilian politicians and the powerful military.

Algeria is one of Africa's richest countries, as the No. 3 supplier of natural gas to Europe, with $190 billion in reserves, up $8 billion in the last year alone.

On Jan. 16, a band of al-Qaida affiliated militants attacked the Ain Amenas gas plant and took dozens of foreign workers hostage. After a four-day standoff, the Algerian army moved in and killed 29 attackers and captured three others. At least 37 hostages, including one Algerian worker, died in the battle.

According to the American Stroke Association, a TIA, as it is known, is caused by a temporary blood clot and lasts just a short time and "usually causes no permanent injury to the brain." A third of those suffering from TIA, also known as "warning strokes," go on to have a full stroke within the next year, according to website of the association.

These Guys Are Selling Their Private Photo-Sharing App Divvy From The Back Of A VW Bus

divvybusBootstrapping founders, Jeremy Greenfield and Kayvon Olomi, have taken a non-traditional route to marketing their new photo aggregation and sharing application, Divvy. They’ve hopped into a 1973 VW camper bus and are on a cross-country road trip to tour colleges around the U.S., in an attempt to get the word out about the privacy options their app allows. They left April 1st from Tulsa, and are now in the New York tri-state area, with plans to hit up Boston, MIT, Harvard, and more, before heading to Denver in three weeks. Olomi, who’s also the founder of app development marketplace AppTank, says he built Divvy to scratch a few of his own itches: the hassles of moving between Facebook and Instagram to follow his friends’ photos, the?inability?to zoom in on Instagram photos, and the inability to save those photos. But he also thinks that more private photo sharing is something today’s younger users want. A desire for more private socializing has of course fueled the rise of messaging apps and new twists on photo-sharing, as with the “disposable” photo and video sharing on Shapchat, for example. But penetrating the space as a newcomer is always tough. That’s why Divvy starts off by selling itself as a photo aggregator first and foremost. Today, the app pulls in the feeds from Facebook and Instagram, with plans to support Twitter, Tumblr, Flickr, and Dropbox in the future. You can not only view your friends photos, but also like and comment on them using Divvy. This isn’t an entirely novel concept, since many apps and services have offered the combined albums experience, including Dropbox acquisition Snapjoy, Shutterfly acquisition ThisLife, Picturelife, Woven, Everpix, and even those not focused only on photos, like Flipboard, for example. What Divvy does differently is add its own photo-sharing features to the mix. Like a mini-social network of its own, friends can share photos to all their followers on Divvy, share selectively with individuals or groups, or share with nearby Divvy users – even if they don’t have their contact information. The nearby photo thing has been tried before too – with Color, most notably – but also with more under the radar options like Evertale’s Wink.?It’s a use case that doesn’t quite seem capable of supporting a standalone application of its own, so it makes sense for Divvy to sideline this as an option, not as the key feature. Movement of pyrrole molecules defy 'classical' physics

Apr. 26, 2013 ? New research shows that movement of the ring-like molecule pyrrole over a metal surface runs counter to the centuries-old laws of 'classical' physics that govern our everyday world.

Using uniquely sensitive experimental techniques, scientists have found that laws of quantum physics -- believed primarily to influence at only sub-atomic levels -- can actually impact on a molecular level.

Researchers at Cambridge's Chemistry Department and Cavendish Laboratory say they have evidence that, in the case of pyrrole, quantum laws affecting the internal motions of the molecule change the "very nature of the energy landscape" -- making this 'quantum motion' essential to understanding the distribution of the whole molecule.

The study, a collaboration between scientists from Cambridge and Rutgers universities, appeared in the German chemistry journal Angewandte Chemie earlier this month.

A pyrrole molecule's centre consists of a "flat pentagram" of five atoms, four carbon and one nitrogen. Each of these atoms has an additional hydrogen atom attached, sticking out like spokes.

Following experiments performed by Barbara Lechner at the Cavendish Laboratory to determine the energy required for movement of pyrrole across a copper surface, the team discovered a discrepancy that led them down a 'quantum' road to an unusual discovery.

In previous work on simpler molecules, the scientists were able to accurately calculate the 'activation barrier' -- the energy required to loosen a molecule's bond to a surface, allowing movement -- using 'density functional theory', a method that treats the electrons which bind the atoms according to quantum mechanics but, crucially, deals with atomic nuclei using a 'classical' physics approach.

Surprisingly, with pyrrole the predicted 'activation barriers' were way out, with calculations "less than a third of the measured value." After much head scratching, puzzled scientists turned to a purely quantum phenomenon called 'zero-point energy'.

In classical physics, an object losing energy can continue to do so until it can be thought of as sitting perfectly still. In the quantum world, this is never the case: everything always retains some form of residual -- even undetectable -- energy, known as 'zero-point energy'.

While 'zero-point energy' is well known to be associated with motion of the atoms contained in molecules, it was previously believed that such tiny amounts of energy simply don't affect the molecule as a whole to any measurable extent, unless the molecule broke apart.

But now, the researchers have discovered that the "quantum nature" of the molecule's internal motion actually does affect the molecule as a whole as it moves across the surface, defying the 'classical' laws that it's simply too big to feel quantum effects.

'Zero-point energy' moving within a pyrrole molecule is unexpectedly sensitive to the exact site occupied by the molecule on the surface. In moving from one site to another, the 'activation energy' must include a sizeable contribution due to the change in the quantum 'zero-point energy'.

Scientists believe the effect is particularly noticeable in the case of pyrrole because the 'activation energy' needed for diffusion is particularly small, but that many other similar molecules ought to show the same kind of behavior.

"Understanding the nature of molecular diffusion on metal surfaces is of great current interest, due to efforts to manufacture two-dimensional networks of ring-like molecules for use in optical, electronic or spintronic devices," said Dr Stephen Jenkins, who heads up the Surface Science Group in Cambridge's Department of Chemistry.

"The balance between the activation energy and the energy barrier that sticks the molecules to the surface is critical in determining which networks are able to form under different conditions."
