Landlords and college chiefs urged to hold talks

Friday, September 07, 2012

A Fine Gael TD has offered to facilitate talks between landlords and officials from University College Cork in a bid to tackle anti-social student behaviour.

Jerry Buttimer stepped in last night after the body representing landlords who own property around UCC criticised the university for failing to engage with them.

Mr Buttimer hit out at landlords on Monday for not attending a meeting of Cork City?s joint policing committee (JPC), where garda? outlined plans to crack down on anti-social issues affecting residential areas around the city?s two biggest third-level colleges.

They said landlords are a key part of the solution.

However, the Connaught Avenue and College Road Property Owners? Association, which represents around 40 landlords renting property to some 800 students around UCC, said their approaches to college authorities offering solutions to the problem have been effectively ignored.

The association?s chair-person, Fachtna O?Reilly, said given their experience, they have several solutions that could help combat the problems.

"We have a very constructive analysis of the problems and solutions based on the experience of many years and many individuals," he said.

He said they are ready, willing, and able to meet UCC to develop a united approach to tackling the issue.

Mr Buttimer said he was surprised and disappointed that the landlords have been apparently ignored.

But he said he is willing to bring the two sides together to find a resolution.

He made contact with Mr O?Reilly yesterday and said he plans to contact the relevant authorities in UCC to arrange a meeting as soon as possible.

"I want to see landlords, and especially those who do not want to play a role in this issue, forging links with the university with the ultimate aim of eliminating these problems," said Mr Buttimer.

Garda? say they have prepared a "robust" policing plan for UCC?s Freshers? Week ? the annual event for first-year students, which begins on Sept 19.

A three-camera CCTV system is also due to be installed around the College Rd area before the end of the academic year.

City manager Tim Lucey said funding is in place for the system, and the tenders are currently being examined.
