Prescription Drug Abuse On The Decline

Prescription drug abuse among Americans declined by 12 percent from 2010 to 2011, according to a newly released survey from the Department of Health and Human Services? Mental Health Services Administration [MHSA.]

Data compiled from the 2011 National Survey on Drug Use and Health shows that the sharpest decline has been a 14 percent drop from the previous year among youths aged 18-25

?We?re making progress and yet we must remain vigilant in this endeavor as much still needs to be done,? said Dr. Westley Clark, the Director for Center for Behavioral Health Statistics and Quality, said during a press conference in Washington, D.C. Monday releasing the report.

Aside from health risks posed by the misuse of prescription drugs, experts warn that prescription drug abuse can lead to use of heroin or other drugs.?Studies show that every day roughly 6,000 first time participants use non-medical prescription drugs and ?a third of them are under the age 18.
