Fierce and red hot, The ArtsCenter is proud to announce the return of the musician crowned officially by the State of Illinois ?Queen of the Blues?.?Daughter of Blues legend Johnny Clyde Copeland, Shemekia has been singing and performing since the age of 8. Still in her early 30?s, she has been accepted in the Blues world as the heir to the throne of legends such as Koko Taylor and Etta James. The young singer recently?performed at The White House with other Blues artists and has played with the likes of the Rolling Stones, Buddy Guy and Eric Clapton.
Living Blues?call Shemekia?s music an??emotional spectrum that encompasses erotic heat, righteous outrage, vulnerability, and even despair, without ever sacrificing the womanly confidence and sassy assertiveness that have long been her trademark?. On ?Lemon Pie?, a track from her most recent album,?33 1/2, Copeland offers ?lemon pie for the poor?, unafraid to look at poverty and political issues in the U.S. Somehow Copeland manages to keep the album lighthearted the tone one of moving forward and shedding ignorance. Political and passionate, Copeland?s music sings with so much soul that still you can?t help but dance.Copeland brings along world-famous guitarist Arthur Nelson, Kevin Jenkins on bass guitar, Morris Roberts on drums and Willie Scandlyn on rhythm guitar. Jenkins has worked with a long list of musicians including Cyndi Lauper and Enrique Iglesias and performed on The Late Show with David Letterman; Nelson is an in-demand guitarist known for his intense, aggressive style. Roberts has been playing for 25 years in the New York music scene while Scandlyn has helped form the modern Blues scene on the West Coast. They bring their individual talents together to highlight the talents of the foremost female blues vocalist of today.
The dance floor will be open! Don?t miss the return of this Queen to The ArtsCenter.
Programs at The ArtsCenter are supported in part by Courtyard by Marriott, Giorgios Hospitality Group, and The North Carolina Arts Council.
