M-Go launches streaming app for Vizio Smart TVs

DNP MGO for Vizio Smart TV

If you were one of those who took a chance on M-Go when it entered the internet streaming arena in January, listen up: you have a new way to enjoy your flicks now that it's rolling out an app for Vizio Smart TVs. This is the latest addition to the growing roster of compatible devices that you can use to rent / buy movies and TV shows on the subscription-free, pay-as-you-go service. Besides the new app, looks like M-Go's also making an effort to stay true to its "people-friendliest" promise by revamping its website for easier navigation. These developments might make M-Go harder to dismiss for potential users despite many similar services out there, and who knows -- if it continues to expand its offerings, more people could give it a second look in the future.

Why Anthony Weiner might stay in New York mayor's race

Editorials and national leaders have urged Anthony Weiner to drop out, following the tawdry revelations this week. But the candidate could be pressing on for several reasons.

By Harry Bruinius,?Staff writer / July 26, 2013

Anthony Weiner, New York mayoral candidate, listens during a news conference Thursday in New York.

Embattled New York mayoral candidate Anthony Weiner is pressing on with his bid to lead America?s largest city ? even if he?s dogged by hecklers on the campaign trail, as well as late-night comedians giddy with jokes about Carlos Danger ?selfies? and sex-chat paramour Sydney Leathers.

Mr. Weiner stopped Thursday at Masbia Flatbush, a kosher soup kitchen, to peel carrots and help volunteers prepare meals for this ?free restaurant? in the heart of an Orthodox Jewish neighborhood in Brooklyn. He was promoting his plan to establish a ?nonprofit czar? for the city, a liaison between the mayor?s office and charitable organizations.

Although his wife, Huma Abedin, a close adviser to former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, did not attend the event, Weiner has given no indication he plans to drop out of the race. Even as editorials and national leaders have urged him to do so, he has insisted that the race should be about the issues that matter to New Yorkers ? not about him.

But with his lead in the race all but evaporated, according to a poll released Thursday, many are asking, do his policy positions even matter anymore? Is he still a viable candidate?

If he?s not, what?s the point of continuing?

?Citizens have a right to decide for themselves whether this personal behavior ... is important to them,? Weiner said to a host of reporters at Masbia. ?I understand I brought this upon myself, but I want to return to having a conversation. I don?t know if I?ll have a chance to, but I certainly want to try.?

It?s a conversation proving more and more difficult ? attested to by the fact that one woman interrupted the event to shout, ?I?m a neighborhood resident and I?m an observant Jew, and we want nothing to do with the likes of Anthony Weiner!? The woman was asked to leave by kitchen workers, yet even so, there was little talk about his idea for a ?nonprofit czar.?

Weiner?s lead over his rivals in the polls is now gone. He currently trails City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, who has retaken the front-runner?s mantle with 25 percent of the city?s registered Democrats, according to Thursday?s NBC 4 New York/Wall Street Journal/Marist poll.

Still, Weiner is second with 16 percent, a statistical tie with Public Advocate Bill de Blasio, who has 14 percent, and with last mayoral election?s runner-up William Thompson, also preferred by 14 percent of primary voters. ?

?I don't think Weiner can win now,? says Larry Sabato, director of the Center for Politics at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. ?I'll even be mildly surprised if he makes the runoff. There's just too much sleaze in the headlines, and even in this age of remarkable public tolerance for sins of the flesh, there are limits. Weiner's reached them.?

Stocks drop at opening as investors take pause

stocks

Stocks went on a roller-coaster ride on Friday, ending with the Dow squeezing out a fifth consecutive week of gains, as investors digested the latest batch of mixed earnings ahead of a busy economic calendar next week.

(Read more: JPMorgan raises ceiling on Wall Street's year-end forecasts)

The Dow Jones Industrial Average ended the day just 3 points ahead, after plunging nearly 150 points during the session. The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq eked out small gains also. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, finished below 13.

Among key S&P sectors, materials lagged, while health care rebounded.

"The market's had a good run near the highs and with earnings season about halfway through, we characterize the results so far as being lackluster to just OK," said Cam Albright, director of asset allocation at Wilmington Trust Investment Advisors. "As the year progresses, we're expecting the economy to start coming out of some of the doldrums from the fiscal impediments from earlier in the year?so we're expecting a better second half and that should help support the market and provide us with the basis to have prices move forward."

(Read more: S&P 500 ready for another pullback?)

On the economic front, consumer sentiment rose to its highest level in six years, with the Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan's final reading on the overall index climbing to 85.1 in July from 84.1 in June. Economists surveyed by Reuters expected a reading of 84.

"This high level of confidence points toward a continued expansion of consumer spending in the year ahead," survey director Richard Curtin said in a statement.

But investors initially shrugged off the positive report, with the Dow plunging nearly 150 points soon after the report. Investors also hesitated to jump in ahead of next week's Federal Reserve's meeting and the widely-followed non-farm payrolls report.

"With the Fed meeting and non-farm payrolls due next week, there will be plenty of news to move the market in the week ahead," said Rebecca O'Keeffe, head of investment at Interactive Investor. "U.S. data has been more mixed in recent weeks, suggesting that next Friday's employment report may not be as good as recent months, in part because the housing market does look to have softened in light of higher interest rates."

Meanwhile, President Obama will not announce a decision about who will lead the Federal Reserve until the fall, according to a White House official. Current Chairman Ben Bernanke's term expires next January.

(Read more: Changes to Fed 'forward guidance' could lead to this)

Among earnings, Amazon.com declined after the Internet retail giant reported an unexpected loss and issued a cautious current-quarter forecast as it continues to invest in new areas like cloud computing services.

Starbucks rose after the coffeehouse chain topped earnings expectations and also forecast current-quarter profit above Street consensus. The company also boosted its full-year guidance as its new menu offerings helped drive customer traffic.

More than 50 percent of S&P 500 companies have reported results so far this quarter, with 68 percent of firms topping earnings expectations and 56 percent beating revenue estimates, according to data from Thomson Reuters. If all remaining companies report earnings in line with estimates, earnings will be up 4.1 percent from last year's second quarter.

Activision Blizzard surged after the videogame publisher said it will buy back nearly $8.2 billion worth of Vivendi's holding in the company.

Japan's Nikkei tumbled to its lowest level in nearly three weeks, as the yen strengthened against the dollar, following an inflation report.

"They looked good with the headline number, but when you dig down and take energy out, they were deflationary again," said Art Cashin, director of floor operations at UBS Financial Services. "That spooked the Japanese market and the yen spiked against the dollar."

Hair-Straightening Product May Endanger Stylists, Clients - Health ...

THURSDAY, July 25 (HealthDay News) ? A popular hair-straightening product can pose a health threat to hairstylists and their customers, researchers say.

The Brazilian Blowout Acai Professional Smoothing Hair Solution could expose people to potentially dangerous levels of the cancer-causing chemical formaldehyde, according to the study in the August issue of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene.

?Our study found that using Brazilian Blowout, without proper engineering controls like local exhaust ventilation, could expose hairdressers and their clients to formaldehyde at levels above the short-term occupational exposure limits,? study author Michelle Stewart said in a University of California, Berkeley, news release.

She conducted the study as a graduate student in the university?s school of public health. Stewart and her colleagues found that formaldehyde concentrations in the air around hairstylists and customers exceeded limits set by the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration, the U.S. National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health, and the California Division of Occupational Safety and Health.

The findings appear in the August issue of the Journal of Occupational and Environmental Hygiene.

?While installing local exhaust ventilation is a traditional exposure control, that solution may not be feasible in small salons due to the cost of ventilation systems, permits, installations, ongoing maintenance and efficacy checks,? Stewart noted.

?The recommendation is that salons use products containing no more than 0.1 percent formaldehyde, but the product we investigated contained 12 percent formaldehyde,? she added.

Symptoms that have been reported by hairstylists when using hair-straightening treatments such as Brazilian Blowout include watery eyes, runny nose, upper respiratory tract irritation and nosebleeds. The product is available in more than 6,000 salons within the United States, according to the news release.

The Apple TV 3 comes with awesome features and ability to play HD videos of 1080 pixel. But, one limiting factor is that like all Apple designed products Apple TV 3 only supports a few video formats .mp4, .m4v, .mov. So, it will be a bit hard to play 1080p/720p MKV on Apple TV3.

I've heard of options mostly involving AirPlay work around, but it worked kinda stuttery. The most seamless one would be to convert MKV into MP4 files. The upside is that you can then share your iTunes library with your Apple TV 3, and you won't have to use AirPlay anymore. The Apple TV 3 just automatically fetches the video from your iTunes library over the network and plays it back. Plus, Apple TV3 can't decode AC3, but will pass it through to your receiver. Here I will give you a perfect solution to enable Apple TV 3 play MKV videos flawlessly and pass-through Dolby Digital 5.1 sound for your Home Theater.

First download and install the app- Brorsoft Video Converter for Mac:

Overall, it?s a yet professional and easy-to-use video convert program. With it, you can fast encode MKV to Apple TV 3 playable M4V video keeping the HD quality. What?s more, an AC-3 encoded audio track will also be included for Apple TV 3 to pass-through Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, so that it will work in surround sound when ATV 3 is connected to audio receiver, and also in stereo when Apple TV 3 is connected with TV only. Besides MKV format, this software is able to convert videos in all main formats like AVI, MPEG, VOB, FLV, DVR-MS, TiVo, AVCHD, etc. You can even optimize the video quality for specific devices. Now it's the step-by-step tutorial for you.

How to convert 1080p MKV videos to Apple TV 3 with 5.1 channel on Mac

1. After installation, run the MKV to Apple TV 3 Converter Mac. Click ?Add? button to load your source files.

Tip: Tick off the ?Merge into one? box to join multiple video flies into one if necessary.

2. Click on Format > Apple TV. From the drop down menu, select the proper output format. For Apple TV 3 users, Apple TV 3 Dolby Digital Pass-through (*.m4v) is recommended.

3. Hit the Convert button; it will start to convert MKV movie files to Apple TV 3 supported video format M4V with AC3 5.1 surround sound on Mac OS X.

When the conversion process shows in 100%, you can get the output videos for Apple TV 3 freely. Later, you can transfer/stream MKV videos to Apple TV 3 on Mac for enjoyment freely with the Dolby Digital 5.1 surround sound while ATV 3 is connected to A/V receiver.

Hispanic Astronaut Inspires High School Students

Hispanic Business:

Serena Aunon, the second Hispanic woman to become a NASA astronaut, spoke to about 100 Latino high school students Friday to try to spark their interest in science and technology.

"I think the biggest thing to start with is exposure," she said. "Sometimes you just have to plant that seed. You just need to plant one idea."

Aunon's audience was made up of high school juniors and seniors from throughout the state attending the four-day Hispanic College Institute at Virginia State University in Chesterfield County.

Al Qaeda militants flee Iraq jail in violent mass break-out

By Kareem Raheem and Ziad al-Sinjary

BAGHDAD/MOSUL, Iraq (Reuters) - Hundreds of convicts, including senior members of al Qaeda, broke out of Iraq's Abu Ghraib jail as comrades launched a military-style assault to free them, authorities said on Monday.

The deadly raid on the high-security jail happened as Sunni Muslim militants are gaining momentum in their insurgency against the Shi'ite-led government that came to power after the U.S. invasion to oust Saddam Hussein.

Suicide bombers drove cars packed with explosives to the gates of the prison on the outskirts of Baghdad on Sunday night and blasted their way into the compound, while gunmen attacked guards with mortars and rocket-propelled grenades.

Other militants took up positions near the main road, fighting off security reinforcements sent from Baghdad as several militants wearing suicide vests entered the prison on foot to help free the inmates.

Ten policemen and four militants were killed in the ensuing clashes, which continued until Monday morning, when military helicopters arrived, helping to regain control.

By that time, hundreds of inmates had succeeded in fleeing Abu Ghraib, the prison made notorious a decade ago by photographs showing abuse of prisoners by U.S. soldiers.

"The number of escaped inmates has reached 500, most of them were convicted senior members of al Qaeda and had received death sentences," Hakim Al-Zamili, a senior member of the security and defense committee in parliament, told Reuters.

"The security forces arrested some of them, but the rest are still free."

One security official told Reuters on condition of anonymity: "It's obviously a terrorist attack carried out by al Qaeda to free convicted terrorists with al Qaeda."

A simultaneous attack on another prison, in Taji, around 20 km (12 miles) north of Baghdad, followed a similar pattern, but guards managed to prevent any inmates escaping. Sixteen soldiers and six militants were killed.

CONVOY ATTACK

Sunni insurgents, including the al Qaeda-affiliated Islamic State of Iraq, have been regaining strength in recent months and striking on an almost daily basis against Shi'ite Muslims and security forces amongst other targets.

The violence has raised fears of a return to full-blown conflict in a country where Kurds, Shi'ite and Sunni Muslims have yet to find a stable way of sharing power.

Recent attacks have targeted mosques, amateur football matches, shopping areas and cafes where people gather to socialize after breaking their daily fast for the holy Muslim month of Ramadan.

Relations between Islam's two main denominations have been put under further strain from the civil war in Syria, which has drawn in Shi'ite and Sunni fighters from Iraq and beyond to fight against each other.

In the city of Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) north of Baghdad, a suicide bomber detonated a vehicle packed with explosives behind a military convoy in the eastern Kokchali district, killing at least 22 soldiers and three passers-by, police said.

Following the attack, leaflets were found near mosques in Mosul signed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, which was formed earlier this year through a merger between Syrian and Iraqi affiliates of al Qaeda.

"After receiving information from our precious nation's sons about the arrival of a convoy of the Safavid Raafidi Army... the lions of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant have confronted them," read the leaflets, using derogatory terms to refer to Shi'ites.

Four other policemen, were killed in a separate attack in western Mosul, Iraq's third-largest city and capital of the Sunni-dominated Nineveh province.

Nearly 600 people have been killed in militant attacks across Iraq so far this month, according to violence monitoring group Iraq Body Count.

That is still well below the height of bloodletting in 2006-07, when the monthly death toll sometimes exceeded 3,000.

Lawsuit may hinge on whether Harrisburg U. is public or private ...

The financially troubled Harrisburg University of Science and Tech??nol??ogy (HUST) has asked a federal judge to dismiss a retaliation lawsuit filed by a former professor. She claims she was fired over criticism she and her husband leveled against HUST officials.

The former prof?s husband operates the watchinghu.com blog. He has often posted scathing criticisms of HUST administration with such headlines as ?HU Leadership Still Stupid,? ?Harrisburg University: No Ethics, No Honesty and No Math Skills? and ?We Need to Oust This Administration.?

Although HUST is nominally a private institution, Dauphin County has intervened to make university bond payments on several occasions.

Because the professor?s suit alleges interference with her free speech rights, the public/private issue is important. Private institutions do not have to guarantee free speech, but public institutions do.

The professor claims her firing was in retaliation for the blog posts.

Kody: 'Sister Wives' are not pushing polygamy

TV

Image: Sister Wives

Kyle Christy / TLC

The Brown family, from left, Christine, Meri, Janelle, Robyn and Kody.

The fourth season of TLC's "Sister Wives" is about to kick off, and that means there's more drama on the way for the Brown family.

Even though Kody Brown and his four wives ? Meri, Janelle, Christine and Robyn ? have been open about how they live their lives for some time now, there are still those who have big problems with the polygamous family and aren't shy about saying so. In fact, on the upcoming season premiere, the family travels to St. George, Utah, and find themselves in the midst of some of those unwelcoming faces.

It's no surprise that there are some in St. George who have a particular problem when the topic of polygamy comes up. The community is located close the FLDS headquarters, a base for a group of Mormon Fundamentalists who embrace polygamy and have been embroiled in many scandals involving child marriages, child abuse and incest. St. George is also the town in which FLDS president Warren Jeffs was once tried and convicted of being an accomplice to the rape (a conviction later overturned) before going on to be convicted of two counts of sexual assault of a child in Texas. (Jeffs is currently serving a life sentence for his crimes.)

While the Brown family practices a very different sort of polygamy than that seen in Jeffs' church, it's a difference that's lost on some. That's why Robyn felt so much trepidation about returning to the area, as she explains in this clip from the "Sister Wives" premiere that TLC shared exclusively with TODAY.com.

"I remember in high school, actually, teachers would make derogatory comments about polygamists," she said. "I kept my nose down and I hid who I was because of this."

The family actually encountered a wide range of reactions on the trip, as the full episode will reveal on Sunday night, including one very negative reaction.

TODAY.com recently spoke to Browns about that and asked them how they felt about encountering such rejection.

"I just feel like we live in a world of diversity, and we've chosen how to structure our family," Kody explained. "And we are not pushing it on other people. We don?t even push it on our children."

It's a live-and-let-live attitude he'd like to see from others.

"We kind of anticipate that we'd really appreciate the same kind of tolerance," Kody said.

Things are much different back in their new hometown of Las Vegas. There, the family has found tolerance.

"It's been the land of opportunity," Christine told TODAY.com. "I know that seems weird when you talk about Vegas. We usually refer to it as Sin City, but because of the diversity of the culture, it's actually worked in our benefit. You know, our children aren't expected to be anything but good people ? just because of the diversity. ... As far as the ladies goes, (we have) more friends than we've ever had before. People are welcoming and it's really, really sweet."

And for the kids in school, it's a far cry from the environment Robyn recalled in the episode.

"They've been fully embraced, and they can embrace their brothers and sisters (publicly)," Janelle said. "It is true that we have two or three children in the same grade. We actually have multiple children graduating from high school every year for the next 10 years, pretty much. So the teachers in the school are very well aware of who we are because they have so many of the children."

See how the Browns' trip to St. George plays out and find out more about life back home on the season premiere of "Sister Wives," Sunday at 9 p.m. on TLC.

Nissan India ties up with Ennore Port for export of vehicles

HandshakeLeading automaker Nissan India has entered into a 10-year agreement with Ennore Port Ltd for export of its vehicles.

Ennore Port CMD M A Bhaskarachar and Kenichiro Yomura, President of Nissan's India operations and MD and CEO of Nissan Motor India pvt Ltd, signed the agreement in the presence of Union Shipping Minister G K Vasan.

As per the agreement, Nissan Motor India 'can enjoy concessions in the wharfage up to 60,000 units per annum.'

Free parking space for the first 15 days and priority in handling its automobile units are part of the fresh agreement, NMIPL said.

The automaker had signed its first pact with EPL in 2008 and started exports of cars in 2010.

It has so far exported over 250,000 units.

Nissan Motor India said the agreement is valid for 10 years which can be terminated by either of them with a three-month notice.

"It is subject to cancellation if the export of automobile units of Nissan or Renault is found through any other sea ports other than EPL or Chennai Port either in part or in full," the EPL added.

The EPL CMD said they had worked hard for eight months to finalise the agreement and outlined his commitment to provide all facilities to NMIPL.

Yomura said his firm was the first auto company to sign a pact with EPL, adding cars had been exported to over 100 countries in Africa and Europe from the south Indian port.

Shirley STM will ask voters for $500,873 for energy upgrades

SHIRLEY -- Voters will be asked to approve spending more than $500,000 at next month's Special Town Meeting to pay for green investments into various town-owned buildings.

The expenditure is expected to help the town save nearly $50,000 annually on its energy costs.

ABM Building Solutions, of Woburn, has been working with the town's Energy Committee to help develop energy-saving programs throughout the town. Under the partnership, the town is seeking approval from voters to borrow $570,873 to pay for green investments into various town-owned buildings.

The warrant article, as proposed, does not require a debt exclusion, according to Energy Chairman Brian Dumont, because the town will utilize existing operating budgets to pay annual expenses.

Representatives from ABM have guaranteed a 20 percent energy savings per year over 15 years. If savings are not achieved, they say the company will reimburse the difference to the town.

The energy-efficiency upgrades planned for the town span across seven town-owned buildings, as well as a comprehensive streetlight-upgrade program. Key upgrades include insulation and air sealing, installing efficient lighting, stabilizing the indoor climate and reducing the amount of wasted energy, replacing 209 streetlights with LED lights and converting three buildings' heating fuel from oil to natural gas.

Dumont said the program is guaranteeing a 26 percent savings in energy and at today's rates, a 39 percent

dollar savings, which equals about $50,000 a year. Once the debt service is paid off, annual energy savings will be available to meet other non-program operational requirements as determined by the town.

Dumont said he is proud of the work he and other members of the Energy Committee have done to get this far.

"The Energy Committee has worked hard to develop a program that will allow the town to redirect budgeted dollars from going to Devens utilities and National Grid and instead invest in our buildings," Dumont said.

Town Treasurer Kevin Johnston, also a member of the Energy Committee, said that by investing in the program, the town can bring town buildings up "to peak performance, retire aging and failing equipment from our capital plan, and improve the overall comfort and performance of our buildings."

Selectman Bob Prescott said he hopes to get a recommendation from the Finance Committee as to whether the energy savings would pay for the borrowing and not actually impact taxpayers, but said he is not sure selectmen will see it before the Aug. 5 Town Meeting.

"I'm not seeing anything that's saying no," he said. "You could say I'm cautiously optimistic."

A public forum will be held at 7 p.m. on July 29 at Town Hall. The Town Meeting is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. on Aug. 5 at the middle school.

AP: Study finds fracking chemicals didn't spread

(AP) ? A landmark federal study on hydraulic fracturing, or fracking, shows no evidence that chemicals from the natural gas drilling process moved up to contaminate drinking water aquifers at a western Pennsylvania drilling site, the Department of Energy told The Associated Press.

After a year of monitoring, the researchers found that the chemical-laced fluids used to free gas trapped deep below the surface stayed thousands of feet below the shallower areas that supply drinking water, geologist Richard Hammack said.

Although the results are preliminary ? the study is still ongoing ? they are a boost to a natural gas industry that has fought complaints from environmental groups and property owners who call fracking dangerous.

Drilling fluids tagged with unique markers were injected more than 8,000 feet below the surface, but were not detected in a monitoring zone 3,000 feet higher. That means the potentially dangerous substances stayed about a mile away from drinking water supplies.

"This is good news," said Duke University scientist Rob Jackson, who was not involved with the study. He called it a "useful and important approach" to monitoring fracking, but cautioned that the single study doesn't prove that fracking can't pollute, since geology and industry practices vary widely in Pennsylvania and across the nation.

The boom in gas drilling has led to tens of thousands of new wells being drilled in recent years, many in the Marcellus Shale formation that lies under parts of Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio and West Virginia. That's led to major economic benefits but also fears that the chemicals used in the drilling process could spread to water supplies.

The mix of chemicals varies by company and region, and while some are openly listed the industry has complained that disclosing special formulas could violate trade secrets. Some of the chemicals are toxic and could cause health problems in significant doses, so the lack of full transparency has worried landowners and public health experts.

The study done by the National Energy Technology Laboratory in Pittsburgh marked the first time that a drilling company let government scientists inject special tracers into the fracking fluid and then continue regular monitoring to see whether it spread toward drinking water sources. The research is being done at a drilling site in Greene County, which is southwest of Pittsburgh and adjacent to West Virginia.

Eight new Marcellus Shale horizontal wells were monitored seismically and one was injected with four different man-made tracers at different stages of the fracking process, which involves setting off small explosions to break the rock apart. The scientists also monitored a separate series of older gas wells that are about 3,000 feet above the Marcellus to see if the fracking fluid reached up to them.

The industry and many state and federal regulators have long contended that fracking itself won't contaminate surface drinking water because of the extreme depth of the gas wells. Most are more than a mile underground, while drinking water aquifers are usually within 500 to 1000 feet of the surface.

Kathryn Klaber, the CEO of the industry-led Marcellus Shale Coalition, called the study "great news."

"It's important that we continue to seek partnerships that can study these issues, and inform the public of the findings," Klaber said.

While the lack of contamination is encouraging, Jackson said he wondered whether the unidentified drilling company might have consciously or unconsciously taken extra care with the research site, since it was being watched. He also noted that other aspects of the drilling process can cause pollution, such as poor well construction, surface spills of chemicals, and wastewater.

Jackson and his colleagues at Duke have done numerous studies over the last few years that looked at whether gas drilling is contaminating nearby drinking water, with mixed results. None of them have found chemical contamination but they did find evidence that natural gas escaped from some wells near the surface and polluted drinking water in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Scott Anderson, a drilling expert with the Environment Defense Fund, said the results sound very interesting.

"Very few people think that fracking at significant depths routinely leads to water contamination. But the jury is still out on what the odds are that this might happen in special situations," Anderson said.

One finding surprised the researchers: Seismic monitoring determined one hydraulic fracture traveled 1,800 feet out from the well bore; most traveled just a few hundred feet. That's significant because some environmental groups have questioned whether the fractures could go all the way to the surface.

The researchers believe that fracture may have hit naturally occurring faults, and that's something both industry and regulators don't want.

"We would like to be able to predict those areas" with natural faults and avoid them, Hammack said.

Jackson said the 1,800-foot fracture was very interesting, but also noted it is still a mile from the surface.

The DOE team will start to publish full results of the tests over the next few months, said Hammack, who called the large amount of field data from the study "the real deal."

"People probably will be looking at the data for years to come," he said.

Are Google Now Promoting Black Hat SEO Tactics?

Are Google Now Promoting Black Hat SEO Tactics?

Pardon the deliberately provocative title of this post as the answer is obviously no of course they are not. However, if you have seen Google?s latest Chrome advert (shown below) in the UK you might stop and wonder, as part way through the advert they deliberately show a client breaking Google?s own terms of service.

Black Hat SEO Tactics

At about 25 seconds in, the advert shows the business owner searching Google for fashion bloggers. She then sends the blogger a satchel in the hope of favourable reviews, links or maybe both. This is clearly against Google?s own terms of service as published here. In particular this part:

Buying or selling links that pass PageRank. This includes exchanging money for links, or posts that contain links; exchanging goods or services for links; or sending someone a ?free? product in exchange for them writing about it and including a link.

Now, the question on my mind is whether this is any different from what Interflora did when they gave away free flowers to bloggers in the hope they would receive favourable reviews and/or links. Once Google found out they slapped Interflora?s rankings down, as reported on Search Engine Journal and many other places.

This isn?t the first case of double standards by the search engine giant. Take a look at this post on seobook.com for another instance of ?do as we say and not as we do?!

Please add your opinion below.
